A fog machine that sits through the winter with the wrong leftovers inside is the one that sputters or clogs next October. The fix takes about fifteen minutes and a few cheap supplies, such as a gallon of distilled water, a lint-free cloth and a fresh jug of water-based fog fluid for next season. The steps below follow the Froggy’s Fog user manual and a recent maintenance guide from Ulanzi, and we note where they differ.

What do you need before you put a fog machine away?

ItemWhat it is for
Distilled waterFlushing the system if you are cleaning before storage
Lint-free clothWiping the exterior, nozzle and vent slots
Fine mesh strainer or funnelStraining leftover fluid back into its container (the Froggy’s manual says plastic or glass, not metal)
Original fluid containerKeeping leftover fluid labeled and sealed
Lidded binDust-free storage for the machine, remote and cord

How do you clean and drain a fog machine for storage?

  1. Unplug and let it cool. The Froggy’s manual says to let the machine cool before handling and to unplug it before filling. Ulanzi suggests waiting at least 30 minutes.
  2. Drain the tank. Pour leftover fluid through a fine mesh filter into a plastic or glass container, ideally the original one. Froggy’s says to always drain the tank before mailing or transporting the unit.
  3. Clean if output was weak. Froggy’s says to clean when output noticeably drops, typically around every 40 hours of use: flush with distilled water, refill with good-quality fluid and run 5–10 cycles. For a full walkthrough, see our guide to cleaning and unclogging a fog machine.
  4. Wipe it down. Use a clean, lint-free cloth on the exterior and clear dust or lint from the ventilation slots.
  5. Pack it. Coil the cord, keep the remote with the machine and store everything together.

Safety: Never run a fog machine without fluid, since the manual warns it can permanently damage the pump, and keep it away from moisture because it is not waterproof. Fog machines are for adult operation only.

Should you leave fluid in the machine or empty it?

This is where advice differs. The Froggy’s manual says the fluid left in the internal plumbing lubricates the pump, which is why it asks you to drain the tank rather than flush every line dry. Ulanzi, a lighting-accessory maker, says to keep the tank completely empty and dry because fluid left in it can cause a stubborn clog. Both agree the tank itself should be emptied. If you own a different brand, check its manual for what to do with the lines, and when in doubt, empty the tank and follow the manufacturer.

Where should you store a fog machine?

Froggy’s says to store the machine in a cool, dry place, away from freezing temperatures, heat above 120°F and damp spaces. That makes an unheated garage in a cold climate or a hot attic risky. Ulanzi suggests a dry, dust-free spot, ideally the original box. If possible, Froggy’s says to run the machine for 15 minutes or more about every six months, which is a good reminder to schedule a spring test. When you pull it out next fall, use only fluid the manual approves; our fog fluid guide explains the options.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I leave fog fluid in my fog machine over winter? Both sources advise emptying the tank. Froggy’s says fluid in the internal plumbing helps lubricate the pump, so drain the tank but follow your own model’s manual for the lines.

What temperature is safe for storing a fog machine? Froggy’s advises avoiding freezing temperatures and heat above 120°F, plus humid or damp spaces. Other brands may differ.

Can I store leftover fog fluid? The Froggy’s manual says to return strained fluid to its original container. Discard fluid that looks contaminated, and check the label for storage guidance.
